Health
Care

Over
46 million Americans lack health insurance and access to quality health
care. Many more lack adequate health care insurance coverage.
Medical emergencies are the largest contributor to individual bankruptcies
in the United States.
The United States is the only industrialized country which lacks universal
health care for its citizens and health statistics reflect this glaring
discrepancy. Currently, $1.6 trillion is spent every year on
health care in the United States with over $400 billion going to corporate
profits, marketing, and needless paperwork.
Instead of continuing the unsuccessful piecemeal approach to health
care for the unemployed, underemployed and the self employed, it is
time for a constructive alternative: Universal, single-payer,
not-for-profit health care; or “Medicare for All”.
There is no reason why anyone in this country should be lacking health
care. America clearly has the resources to provide universal
health care. Complete coverage, such as the Canadian system,
will cost no more than what we are paying right now. We are
already paying for universal care but not receiving it. The
current dysfunctional system prioritizes corporations making profits,
rather than medical professionals providing quality health care to
those in need. |

On February 8, 2005, John Conyers (D-MI) and 68 other members of the
House of Representatives introduced H.R.676, which provides for comprehensive
health insurance coverage for all United States residents. This
legislation establishes the United States National Health Insurance
Program to provide free health care that includes all medically necessary
care, such as primary care and prevention, prescription drugs, emergency
care, and mental health services. The bill gives patients the
freedom to choose between any participating physicians and institutions
and ensures payments to hospitals and health professionals for services.
It provides for the eventual integration of the health programs of
the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Indian Health Service
into the Program.
It is time to put patients first! As a U.S. Senator, Paul Richards
will introduce the Senate’s equivalent of H.R. 676 and work
tirelessly to secure its passage. |
